Housebreaking Your Puppy

Did You Know? It takes 18-24 months to reliably housebreak a puppy. the key word is reliable – which means you can leave the puppy for eight hours and the puppy will not have an accident. Housebreaking depends on your diligence and the puppy's readiness. Just think of the mess if babies didn't wear diapers! Plus, they are not ready to be potty-trained until they are 2-3 years old. A puppy is no different. Reliability depends on your puppy's physical and mental development, and your diligence in taking him out at appropriate times.

In the meantime, you can be assured that there will be, at least, occasional accidents. Also, if the puppy is sick, it might have diarrea or vomit – and it could be on your new carpet, bed or sofa. If these things are not acceptable to you, if you don't have the patience or the lifestyle to reliably housebreak your puppy, if you strongly dislike cleaning up messes, a puppy should NOT be in your future.
